Top 5 Rainy Day Activities

Don’t let dreary weather dampen your day these school holidays!

When the weather’s a bit gloomy and the kids can’t play outside it’s easy for boredom to set in.  That’s why we’ve put together our top 5 tips for keeping the little ones entertained when it’s dismal outdoors - so you can beat the rainy-day school holiday blues with some great kid’s activities.

Create an indoor picnic

The kids will love getting organized for an indoor picnic – the planning and preparation will keep them busy for hours and best of all you get to enjoy some scrumptious foods with them!  There are loads of simple ideas that are safe for small fingers, and here are a few of our favourites for rainy day activities:

Personal pizzas – for a simple pizza idea just grab some small Lebanese bread rounds, set up a toppings bar and let the little ones customize their own individual pizza.

Healthy wraps – making wraps can be fun and super tasty.  Start with flour tortillas, add some sliced meat, cucumber, avocado, tomato, salad greens and chutney then wrap up with kitchen paper into a bundle of goodness!

Three ingredient brownies – who doesn’t love a decadent brownie and with just 3 ingredients you’ll be hard pressed to find an easier recipe than this one.  Simply mix 2 eggs with ½ cup of standard flour and then add the magic ingredient – 1¼ cups of Nutella.  Mix to a smooth batter, pour into a greased baking pan and pop in the oven at 180o C for 15 minutes.  Instant deliciousness!

Strawberry lemonade – for a fruity twist on a standard drink, throw a punnet of strawberries into the blender, strain and stir into lemonade.  Refreshingly simple and oh so good.

Go camping – indoors

You don’t need a tent to go camping and with just a few simple steps, you can turn an ordinary room into a land of adventure.  It’s easy for the kids to set up camp indoors by draping sheets over the couch or dining chairs then adding some blankets and cushions for extra comfort.  Or for an added challenge, turn the campsite into a multi-level pillow fort with tunnels and rooms by getting creative with furniture, pillows and fabrics.

For an extra touch, get the kids to make some decorative garlands by cutting star shapes from coloured or sparkly paper and then stringing them along the outside of the tent – a little star gazing in the great indoors!

Indoor Treasure Hunt

Treasure hunts are awesome and the ultimate boredom-buster these school holidays!  Develop around 7 clues or riddles for each player, tailoring them for the ages of your little hunters, making them more difficult for the older kids.  The clues guide each player from one spot to another, building excitement and anticipation for the treasure they’ll find at the end.

Go Ice Skating

There are loads of indoor school holiday activities available outside the home and ice skating is one that will keep the whole family entertained for hours.  It’s the essential all weather chill-out experience that’s perfect for the kids – big and small - to lace up some skates and get out on the ice.

Check out the Movies

The movies are a great place for indoor activities and during school holidays there are always new releases out just for the kids.  Their favourite characters will come to life in an explosion of colour, thrills and laughter in some big screen fun that’s sure to keep everyone entertained.
