Tee off at the Australian Open

Golf club and tee

The Emirates Australian Open is one of our country's most popular and eagerly awaited international events, and this year's golfing extravaganza is set to be no different. Held across 27-30 November at the Australian Golf Club in Sydney, now's the time to consider heading to the city to secure your vantage point before the action.

About the event

The initial field size starts out at 156 players, cutting down to the top 60 professionals (plus ties) once the second round is completed. Defending champion Rory McIlroy will be fighting it out for the coveted Stonehaven Cup alongside Adam Scott, Australia's own Jake Higginbottom and many more.

The Open has a century-long history that dates back to 1904, with the event evolving from a local one through to an international sporting tournament ranked by many top players as the world's fifth Major. And for fans heading to this year's Open, there's plenty in store to keep you occupied in between the golfing action. Head to the Australian Golf Club's practice facilities to see your favourite players up close, whether they're working on their putting or practicing their chip shot. Make sure you bring along something to have signed at the autograph station, and whet your appetite at The Championship Village where you can not only keep abreast of the game with the electronic super screen and live scoring, but also enjoy gourmet snacks and refreshments.

Grandstand seating is free to the public, but make sure you get in early to secure your spot. Gates open at 6.00am on Tuesday-Friday and 6.30 am Saturday and Sunday. Just make sure you switch your mobile to silent and leave any digital and video cameras at home.

As for getting to the Open, you have plenty of public transport options. As the venue offers no public car parking, it's advised you take up one of the many buses, shuttles or trains options available to you. The closest station is at Mascot, where a free shuttle bus service will take you to the Golf Club daily. The shuttle bus runs from 6.00am until 6.00pm or 7.00pm throughout the event. Locally, take bus route 301 to get to the course.

About the course

The Australian Golf Course is one of the best in Australia, and is certainly one of the country's most exclusive. Founded in the early 1880s, it hosted the first tournament way back in 1904 and many more since then. Created by renowned golf course designer Mike Clayton, the course is truly spectacular and offers plenty of vantage points for spectators to witness golf at its best.
