Moonlight Cinemas are some of the most beloved destinations in an Australian summer. With locations in Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Port Douglas, Perth and Sydney, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding what to do on your great getaway this sunny season.
Simply book in your holiday accommodation, pack up the kids and head down to a night of movie watching under the stars.
The Maltesers Moonlight Cinemas will be showcasing advance screenings, new releases, family favourites and cult movies to delighted audiences across Australia as soon as summer gets underway. The different locations each have separate start dates, schedules and locations. Here's a rundown of the basics:
Adelaide The outdoor cinema will return to the lawns of Botanic Park from November 2014.
Melbourne Head to the Central Lawn from December this year to catch movies on the grass.
Brisbane December will see the lawn of New Farm Park at Brisbane Powerhouse come alive.
Perth Kings Park and Botanic Garden is the scene of the December revival of Moonlight Cinemas.
Port Douglas The Port Douglas Moonlight Cinema season has come to a close for the year, but stay tuned for another cracking round of holiday treats next year!
Sydney Sydney's Moonlight Cinema kicks off at Centennial Park in December 2014.
The cinemas typically stay open well into the new year, giving holiday makers the chance to catch all their favourite films at the variety of locations across the summer break. You can purchase tickets online or at the box office, with special deals on certain nights and for concession passes, Cine Buzz members, seniors and kids. Treat yourself to Gold Grass, which grants you entry and a reserved bean bed (an incredibly comfortable and relaxing vantage point) at a premium viewing location.

As for those who get the movie munchies, you're well covered at Moonlight Cinemas. Enjoy LA style food trucks which serve up delicious treats such as salt and pepper squid, hot dogs, potato chunks, popcorn, candy and plenty of delicious alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. You can also enjoy your own food and drinks with the BYO option, allowing you to save money and eat and drink exactly what you want. Cool down on those hot summer nights with an iced tea or mimosa as you watch your new favourite film on the big screen set against a brilliant night sky backdrop.
The weather obviously plays a big role in whether or not your cinema dreams will come true, but most films won't be cancelled due to light or intermittent rain. For this reason it's advised you bring wet weather gear just in case of showers. If the weather appears to impose a significant risk, the venue manager may cancel the screening.
Many of the venues allow dogs to come along and enjoy the family-friendly event, though they must be kept on a short leash at all times. Your pooch should also keep quiet during the film, and don't forget to bring drinking water for him or her! If you miss out on hiring a bean bed, you can bring along low beach chairs, cushions, rugs and so forth on which to recline. Just be considerate of your fellow movie goers and ensure everyone can see the big screen.
Some venues even put on live entertainment before the film starts, and dancing is encouraged! This is truly the time to get into the spirit of summer, so don't hold back. Just remember to book in your holiday accommodation in advance to ensure you have somewhere to rest your head once the movie is over.
