For one week at the end of March, Sydney is set to become a hub for all things rowing.
That's because the Sydney International Rowing Regatta is sailing into the city, delighting fans, spectators and industry professionals with a collection of signature events that will showcase the best rowing talent in the nation.
The regatta, taking place from 23-29 March, will be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC). The venue has been repurposed from a sand and gravel quarry and converted into a major metropolitan regional park. These days, the area features native aquatic plants and fish in its lakes, water birds in the developed wetlands and a significant collection of native trees and shrubs. This makes for a truly stunning area which you can enjoy as you take part in sporting challenges throughout.
The SIRC is located in Homebush Bay. It's roughly an hour's drive away from the Sydney CBD, which means you have plenty of holiday accommodation options to suit your needs. Mantra Parramatta is just a 40 minute drive away, whereas Mantra on Kent clocks in at an hour journey. There are plenty of other fantastic options within the Sydney area, so you don't have to look far to find the perfect accommodation option for you. Opt for a suite in which you can spread out and make the most of in-room cable television, or spend your days relaxing pool-side as you dream of becoming Australia's next top rower. Many of our properties also feature gyms in which you can practice rowing for yourself, perhaps in preparation for next year's Sydney International Rowing Regatta!
"Get set to sail into the Sydney International Rowing Regatta this March. There will be a week of top sport on display for spectators."
The signature events featured at the International Rowing Regatta include the Australian Open Rowing Championships, King's and Queen's Cup Interstate Regatta and Australian Open Schools Rowing Championships. Within these titles are a huge array of different age group and gender competitions along with para-rowing divisions.
No more than 46 entries are accepted within any event, giving spectators the chance to see the creme de la creme of Australian rowing. See single sculls, lightweight fours, teams of eight and plenty of other combinations team up to compete against each other on the water.
NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation Stuart Ayres has commented on his excitement for the event, saying "as the largest rowing event in Australia, the regatta is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Sydney and NSW to thousands of athletes and spectators, and I encourage everyone to book their tickets today."
Getting to the event is easy. Penrith Railway Station is located around 6km away from the SIRC, and there are plenty of buses running to and from the area. You can drive to and from the venue too, with free parking keeping this exciting event cost effective for everyone.
The Regatta is a ticketed event and it pays to get in quick to secure your spot. There are hospitality packages and multiple-day passes to make it easy and affordable to attend the whole event, or you can just pick and choose the races you want to see. Tickets start from $25, children aged 12 and under can attend for free, and tickets are available for purchase online.
