There is a special feeling in the air during the summer holidays in Brisbane; full of fun, festivity, frivolity (and just a little bit of humidity) there is nothing quite like the summer season to get Brisbane’s event calendar rolling! Whether you’re a local, staying just for a weekend, or visiting the city over the school holidays with the kids, there is an event bound to entertain everyone.
‘Tis the season of Christmas festivities, and Brisbane knows how to do the festive season well! From the lighting of the Christmas tree in the city, the renowned Myer Christmas Parade and joining in with the Carollers, the Christmas cheer is infectious! If you’re in Brisbane with the little ones, be sure to take them to the Christmas movies at Streets Beach in Southbank. While you’re there pick up a few last minute presents at the Christmas Markets, everyone will be enchanted by real Christmas trees and glistening fairy lights, making it feel like a real Christmas wonderland.
For another festively inspired outing, ballet lovers need to factor in a performance of The Nutcracker at QPAC to their holiday itinerary. With a season running from 11 – 23 December, it’s a story that the whole family will enjoy. Embodying the spirit of Christmas, the kids will be enchanted by the life size toys, the magical snow world and of course the beautiful story of kindness between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince.
For six days of music, dancing, circus acts, independent film, comedy and street theatre the Woodford Folk Festival is a must visit. From 27 December to 1 January, Woodfordia is taken over by jovial festival goers with a penchant for the creative arts. Featuring more than 2,000 performers, concerts by notable Australian artists Courtney Barnett and Josh Pyke and a dedicated Children’s festival it is certainly one to add to the summer activity list.
