Entries are now open for the 2015 Mooloolaba Mile, which is the second event of the Queensland Ocean Swim Series. Never fear, though - if swimming isn't your strong suit, you're more than welcome to come along and cheer on the other competitors. Taking place on 21 February, the event is a significant one on the state's ocean swim calendar.
The Mooloolaba Mile pulls in swimmers from all over the country with its accessible 1.6km course, which is well suited to beginner and novice ocean swimmers, as well as becoming popular within swimming's elite circles. Spectators will be well placed to enjoy all the buzz of the swim, which sees the finishing line located on the main beach of Mooloolaba. Bring down your friends and family to cheer on the swimmers as they cross the finish line.
Little ones can get into all the fun by taking part in the 300m Kids Dash, which is a fun and free event for young people aged 8 years and older. Family and friends can encourage their budding swimmers by taking part in the course alongside their young athletes. Upon finishing the event, Event Ambassador Michael Klim will award entrants with a Finishers Certificate.
If you're keen to participate but don't think you have the stamina for the full mile, try the Mooloolaba Half Mile. The 800m swim is accessible to anyone with the desire to swim and have fun, with limited training required to take the plunge. You can even wear a wetsuit to give you extra confidence in the water if you wish - something that is often not allowed in ocean swims. Join the main Mooloolaba Mile course at the halfway mark and enjoy the thrilling final leg of the race, which includes the all-important sprint to the finish. Competitors must be aged 10 and up in order to compete in this event. Anyone aged 18 under will need to have a guardian or parent present during the race.
"The 2015 Mooloolaba Mile is the second event on the Queensland Ocean Swim Series, and presents the perfect opportunity for you to get swimming."
The main event starts at The Spit on Mooloolaba's south-eastern strip, covering a mile (or 1.6km) of water. The course runs a northward path towards the beach finish line after following an M-shaped path. Anyone aged 12 and older is permitted to take part in the Mooloolaba Mile.
