To truly live like a local in the spectacular city of Perth you need to go beyond the classic tourist traps and make the effort to discover some of Perth's hidden gems. We've made things easier for you by putting together a few of our favourites.
Pony Express O
Finding a good local coffee shop is often a first port of call for anyone who's just moved somewhere new, and Mayfair Street's Pony Express O may just fit the needs of any West Perth dweller. It's located in and old stable tucked down a laneway, meaning it's really a word-of-mouth kind of place that you have to know about to stumble upon, and the old world-style building adds plenty of charm.
Enjoy expertly-made coffee by a laid back barista, and try out the clever pay chute - perfect for when you have the correct change! Rumour has it you can even bring your own food to enjoy while you sip on your morning brew, which is often made from single origin beans from a different location each week.
Safari's Record Shack
Get your vinyl hit at Safari's Record Shack. Tucked away at the back of Beans and Bunches florist, this hidden gem was created by a local man named Jim, who has a passion for music - and in particular, vinyl. Peruse through the collection of funk, soul, jazz and favourites from the 1960s, 70s and 80s - and don't forget the disco. The shop is effortlessly cool, featuring umbrellas dangling from the ceiling and with the kind of vibe that makes you want to hang out there all day long.

Frank's Gourmet Meats
Frank's is beloved by locals, many of whom are just discovering the store despite living in the area for years. The Fremantle butchery is one of the last of a dying breed, and a visit here is like stepping back in time to when independent butchers were mainstays of every neighbourhood. Don't be overwhelmed by the abundance of choice and options - the friendly, personalised service here will ensure you get exactly what you want every time, and maybe a little more as well. There are around 30 sausage flavours to choose from and exotic meat options to boot, letting you stock up your new freezer with enough meat to last a lifetime.
Clarences
Mount Lawley locals will fall in love with Clarences, a small neighbourhood bar that is inviting, cosy and serves up exquisite food and drink. Head down Beaufort Street and look out for the pink neon 'bar' sign in the front window to let you know you've arrived, then slip in the front door to be enveloped in a warm, candle-lit atmosphere. Sink into a leather booth or take in the moonlight from the leafy courtyard, sampling the seasonal menu that ranges from small nibbles through to full-on restaurant meals. There are daily specials, and a careful selection of wine, beer, cider and spirits.
Doghouse Cafe
Located in Lathlain, Doghouse is an experience like no other. It's a drive-through hot dog and doughnut shop that is a firm favourite with local tradies, but you don't have to be handy with a spade to stop by here. The menu isn't extensive but what they do, they do very well. Grab a tray of filled doughnuts to take home for dessert, and pick up a hot dog to munch on on the way home.
